About Petek Restaurant

Petek family history dates back to early 1900s when our great grandfather Hasan who left Camlihemsin to work as a baker in Moscow and later in Istanbul where he opened his baker store- selling only bread in 1916. He had to leave Moscow on the verge of the civil riots and prior to Bolsheviks taking the power from Nicholasll. Unfortunately, Hasan past away in Istanbul leaving his oldest son Tevfik Kuyumcuoglu at the age of 14 and his youngest son Enver Kuyumcuoglu at the age of 9 both as orphans. Very difficult years started for the family and forced those two brothers to leave their home at a very young age to support their family. Tevfik went back to work in Moscow as baker again and Enver later on joined him there as well. They managed to run a bakery store together and later on Tevfik left his brother in Moscow and went on to work in Tehran, baking for Riza Pahlavi and the royal family of Iran.

Tevfik decided to settle in Iskenderun by opening his bakery store called “Hemsin” after Ataturk obtained the city back from French rule, after 20 years of invasion, in 1938. Turkish armed forces entered the city on July 5th, 1938 and an agreement was reached with France recognizing İskenderun as an independent state. Ataturk prayed to God - thanking and showing his happiness that Iskenderun was the only Turkish land regained back without a loss of a soldier. Republic of Hatay was annexed to Turkey as the 63rd Turkish province following a referendum in 1939.

The rest of the family started to move to Iskenderun after 1945s. In the early 1960s most of the family were already residing in Iskenderun. The elder son of Tevfik, Necati was studying in İstanbul University majoring in Archeology and son of Enver, İsmail was a great baker already working in Hemsin. Necati quits his university studies in his second year to join his dad and cousin İsmail. After a year at Hemsin, Necati ventured out to open Petek in 1968 with his cousins and brothers. Soon Necati’s younger brother Hasan joined the family to work in the bakery after getting his university diploma as a chemical engineer.

The name ‘’Petek’’ means honeycomb and actually it is Necati’s original handwriting ever since he wrote his imagination on a piece of paper. Petek soon had intimate atmosphere and a characteristic charm with its unique taste combined with excellent service.

With each day that passes, the place became an evermore-indispensable part of the history of İskenderun and Turkey. A heart-felt thank you to ATATURK who got our independence and to the two brothers Tevfık&Enver for not only giving a venerable fight to carry on the tradition but also passing it onto the next generations.
